By MICHAEL HINMANThe American cable channel announced its fall schedule which includes the premiere of "Stargate: Atlantis" on Sept. 28, taking over the Friday 10 p.m. ET timeslot that was once held by "Battlestar Galactica." The series is expected to air new episodes every week (except for Thanksgiving week), with its mid-season finale coming Dec. 7 that will feature the return of Torri Higginson as Dr. Elizabeth Weir.
Higginson had been downgraded to recurring status for "Atlantis'" fourth season, being replaced by "Stargate SG-1's" Amanda Tapping, who is continuing her character of Samantha Carter for her 11th year.
By the beginning of October, SciFi Channel will try to boost interest in its new series "Flash Gordon" by airing "mini-sodes" connected to the "Battlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor," which itself will air Nov. 24 at 9 p.m. ET before getting an almost instant DVD release. Each short will be about two to three minutes long and will feature scenes filmed for the telemovie, but removed because of time constraints. Those shorts, however, will reinstituted back into the telemovie for the DVD release.
"Razor" focuses on the Battlestar Pegasus and its commander, Adm. Cain (Michelle Forbes) beginning with the original Cylon attack on the colonies. The mini-sodes will feature Cylons from the original 1970s series, and a sequence of events that helped formulate the later character of Cain. The entire project was written by Michael Taylor and directed by Felix Alcala, and stars Stephanie Jacobsen as Kendra, as well as "Battlestar Galactica" series regulars Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer.
And as things begin, others must end. The Stan Lee reality show "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" will end its second season Sept. 13, and "Painkiller Jane" will end its series run after one season Sept. 21. "Eureka" will air its second season finale Oct. 2, while the third season of "Doctor Who" ends Oct. 5.
