By ROBIN BROWNFIELDThe series is about investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, a former companion of The Doctor, and her 14-and-younger companions, all of whom encounter monsters and otherworldly creatures in their travels.
This is the second spinoff of the popular time-traveling adventure series. Unlike "Torchwood," the other more adult spinoff which airs on BBC America in the United States, "The Sarah Jane Adventures" is geared more toward younger viewers, though creator/executive producer Russell T. Davies is quick to point out that the stories are not so neutered that adults can't enjoy them.
"There's death and despair," he said, "but less violence and more fun. Also, more hugs."
Davies also promises villains and heroes from the other two shows will show up on SJA.
Smith is played by Elisabeth Sladen, who originally played the role of The Doctor's companion from 1973 to 1976. She reprised the role again recently in "School Reunion," a Season 2 episode of "Doctor Who."
Also to appear in the series will be K-9, the robotic dog of the Doctor who first appeared in the 1970s. K-9 will be voiced by James Leeson, who was the voice of the dog in the '70s series.
