By ROBIN BROWNFIELD“How do you tell a man twice your age that you’re his father?” This is the issue that Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) faces when he works on a case that reminds him of “What’s Left Behind.”
A young boy, Jacob (Daniel Goldman from “Dexter”), who believed he heard monsters in the wall, is kidnapped. Mick suspects it might be a vampire who kidnapped him. ADA Hottie Ben Talbot (Eric Winter) is on the case, and asks Beth (Sophia Myles) to help out, because she had covered two other unsolved cases like this while working at Buzzwire.
The house is an old home, which has a coal chute that had tunnels that went through the walls and allowed him access to space in the ceilings and floors. Jacob could hear the kidnapper in the house.
Mick believes the middle-aged father of the kidnapped boy may be his own son. They live in the house of Mick’s best friend who was shot in WWII. Robert (Robin Thomas) was born seven months after Ray got home, but none months after Mick had an affair with Robert’s mother. Still, there is enough room for doubt that Mick needs to find out if Robert is his son, so he collects DNA samples from Robert while working on the case.
The episode also featured flashbacks to the period where Mick and his friend Ray were stationed in Italy during WWII. Ray was badly wounded during an attack. Mick, who woke up wounded in a US hospital, was the only one to survive the patrol. Ray was gone, thought to be dead, and Mick had an affair with Ray’s wife. It turns out that Ray survived. He was in a coma for months. When Mick found out, he left Lilah, and felt terrible for leaving Ray for dead and having an affair with his wife. He didn’t know whether she was pregnant or not when he left.
Back in the present, Beth has a new job! Ben Talbot offers Beth a job as an investigator for the DA’s office. It seems like a logical job for her to have, given her background, but it may also be Talbot’s way of getting more information for his secret file on Mick St. John.
Mick eventually encounters the kidnapper, who calls him to threaten harm to Beth, but the kidnapper kills himself. Mick rescues the Jacob.
