SciFi Wire Spins Off As Separate Web Site

Seeing the popularity of its Web properties, NBC Universal is making some major changes to its online presence of the SciFi Channel which includes the spinning off of its popular news site SciFi Wire as well as a new division called SciFi Ventures.

"The SciFi brand's deep connection with consumers -- comprised chiefly of trend-setting innovators -- proves that SciFi has the power and the imagination to reach beyond the television screen to become a total global lifestyle brand," SciFi president David Howe told TV Week.

SciFi Ventures will focus primarily on the SciFi Channel's reach beyond its actual cable channel. That includes gadgets, gaming, films and even a children's market.

It will be a part of an expanded Web offering from SciFi Channel that includes a number of online programs, and SciFi Wire getting its own Web site outside of the SciFi Channel's existing site.

It seems there will be plenty of readers to share as SciFi.com had a monthly average of 3.4 million unique visitors in the second quarter, its best ever.

SciFi Wire will set out on its own this fall similar to DVICE and Fidget, which NBCU spun off as technology and gaming sites previously. The news comes after SciFi Wire itself had its best month ever with just under 1 million unique visitors.

Also making their way back to the Internet are Webisodes of "Battlestar Galactica" that will lead up to the final episodes that premiere in January. SciFi.com and Universal Cable Production will produce 10 two- and three-minute serialized Webisode chapters. It was not announced who would be writing and directing the Webisodes, as the scribes from the first batch of Webisodes -- David Weddle and Bradley Thompson -- are now writing for "CSI" on CBS.
