Fox: No 'Battlestar' Faces On 'Virtuality'

Although a lot of attention in the entertainment industry is still focused on "Battlestar Galactica," showrunner Ronald D. Moore already has moved on to future projects including his "Virtuality" pilot for Fox. But fans expecting Moore to follow the path of executive producer partner David Eick in bringing in familiar faces from his critically acclaimed SciFi Channel series needs to think again.

Sources have told SyFy Portal that "Virtuality" won't have any cameo appearances from cast members of "Battlestar Galactica," and in fact will work to distance itself as much as possible from the ragtag fleet series. That includes stunt casting or crossover casting that took place quite liberally in NBC's failed "Bionic Woman" last season that included appearances by Katee Sackhoff, Aaron Douglas and Mark Sheppard.

"NBC banked on 'Battlestar Galactica's' cult following to help fuel marketing for 'Bionic Woman,' and all it did was fall right on its face," a source told SyFy Portal. "Most normal people would look at what really caused 'Bionic Woman's' downfall and could tell you it had nothing to do with the 'Battlestar' people, but Fox isn't taking its chances here."

Moore told SciFi Wire during the Television Critics Association press tour over the weekend that "Virtuality" will be a change in pace compared to what fans might be more familiar with when it comes to "Battlestar Galactica" or even "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

"It's a completely different kind of show," Moore said. "It's about a group of astronauts who are on the first long-range mission to another star, which is going to take about 10 years to get there and back. So it's 12 people in a tin can going in a very straight line for a very, very long time."

To pass the time, the crew uses virtual reality headsets that -- much like Star Trek's holodecks -- begin to malfunction.

"Sure enough, things start going wrong, and they start wondering what's really going on, and certain strange mysteries start occurring," Moore said. "And yet these people are isolated and trapped, just with each other, a very, very long way from home and beyond anyone's help, and they have really only themselves to deal with the strange things that are happening on the ship."

Production on the pilot begins this month.
