By MICHAEL HINMANThe move comes months after Paramount Pictures did a similar tactic with "Star Trek," bumping it from its Christmas release and moving it to May 2009.
"Our reasons for shifting 'Half-Blood Prince' to summer were twofold," said Alan Horn, president and chief operating officer of Warner Bros., according to The Trailer Addict. "We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films -- changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of."
Moving th release of "Half-Blood Prince" is not expected to affect the final two movies in the series, based on J.K. Rowling's final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," according to Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group president Jeff Robinov.
"In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between 'Half-Blood Prince' and the first part of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,'" he said.
The final two chapters, both of which will be directed by David Yates who helmed "Half-Blood Prince" and last year's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," is scheduled to be released in 2010 with the second part coming in 2011.
